My experience with XRT has been amazing.

At first, I had a stage 1 OTS cobb tune and loved it. That opened the car up to what it was capable of and once I realized that, I got hungry for more. I saw a post about XRT and started to get incredibly curious on all the gains someone received from them. Once I emailed XRT(Ed), he informed me BlackBerry Messenger(BBM) is how he chats with all his clients. He is based in the Barbados so we can call each other on BBM or Whatsapp to avoid oversea charges. After tons of research and seeing no other tuner is pushing out that type of gain with my mods, I sold my AP3, and was ready to start.

Ed informed me to download Team Viewer so he could remote into my machine and download all the applications needed to setup the logging parameters and created the file structure for logs and roms. Even if you are not a newb to open source tuning, LET HIM SET IT UP. It will be easier for everyone and if there are any issues, he is perfectly capable of correcting them.

Once all the preliminary stuff was done, he sent me a version zero rom to show me that my car is capable of a lot with stock boost. My jaw dropped. Throttle response was insane, the torque was there, and you can clearly feel that the car enjoyed it much more than the Cobb OTS tune. v0 vs Stock - 3rd Gear Dyno SAE.png

As the process continued, you could feel the car run better and better as the days went on. He transformed my car so much, I would rather drive my car to work, Downtown Washington DC, than take the train. I feel like a little kid every time I hit boost now.

With XRT, they could get maps out same day or next day. Ed is very good with being responsive within a few hours and letting you know if you need to check something on your car or not. He is very particular about how he tunes a car and how it is running. Making sure your car is mechanically fine is key to having a smooth and successful tuning process. Overall, he is a skilled and very knowledgeable tuner. He changed my car from a slow non- responsive 2011 LGT into a responsive torque monster that I enjoy driving every single day. Boost comes on smooth, the car moves when I tap the gas and everything on the car feels great. It took about eight to nine revisions before the car got where it needed to be. He is done with my Subaru for now, but he will be doing my GF’s 100% STOCK CVT Crosstrek and I am sure I will see major improvements there! I attached a Dyno sheet along with Ed’s Virtual dyno of the same dyno pulls.

What makes XRT different to other Tuning Companies/Tuners?

What makes Xtreme Racing Tuning (XRT) different in respect to other Tuning Companies/Tuners?

From time to time, I do get questions referencing XRT. So let me take some time to answer them.

XRT does not adhere to today’s trend in tuning that is growing worldwide where attaining the customer money is key and providing great service takes second place. We believe the service we provided is important and is second to none.

Q: What makes XRT different to others?
A: XRT core interest, passion and precision is what makes that difference. To achieve a thumbs up from its customers or a thank you is its aim. XRT prides itself in not giving up in the most difficult situations or say it cannot be done. We let our work speaks for itself. We just love to take what is given to us and optimise it. Our main focus is giving that SUPERB Experience to the customer, leaving a permanent smile on their face.

Q: Why does XRT costs a little more when compare to other ETunes?
A: XRT does not distinguish the difference between Etuning & local tuning as others do. We believe in given the customers the best quality of service, time and support. This is attest by our valued customers. XRT believes in full customised tuning, even to be there online through the process by the use of remote software like Teamviewer for Live Tuning. We do not offer off the shelf maps with minor tweets or one rom for all cars with the same ECU ID. We also believe in fine tuning to suit your car configuration and your needs. We brought this process over from working with EMS and with customers who race their daily driven cars. Please see our tuning strategy below that makes this all happen….ingrained in out DNA.

Q: What is XRT support service(s) and why is it different to others?
A: We give close to 24hrs of support through Teamviewer, Email, Whatsapp, BBM and BBM Group. Support is fast and reliable. Customers are welcome to even call. In all reviews, XRT is praised for this. It is above standard when compare to the tuning/tuner industries. We provide and request constant feedback from the customer and revisions of roms to reach optimum performance.

Q: What makes your Transmission tuning different to others?
A: XRT takes the time to develop Transmission tuning based on feedback and countless customer reviews to make that difference. In addition, due to feedback, support is given to make changes to suit the car and the customer.

Q: What other services do XRT offer?
A: XRT collaborates with its customers for troubleshooting and diagnostics through data logging and reviews. XRT also offer support for upgrades, even Project Management Services.

Q: If my ECU is not defined or a definition is not available, can you support it?
A: Yes. we create our own definitions for full support, even able to offer better support as a tuner compare to other tuners using Cobbs, Ecutek, etc. We offer a more reliable and safe tune. This is attest by some of our customers who have replaced their Cobbs or existing tuners who used Ecutek to tune their projects and not getting the correct, safe and reliable results.

Q: Do you tune turbo cars?
A: Yes, we do. XRT was born out of WRX/STI tuning. Actually more STI tunes that any other model pre XRT founding. We have work on projects up to 600HP and consulted up to 1000HP.

XRT Subaru CVT Tuning

Subaru Tuning that affects CVT Operations & Performance by Xtreme Racing Tuning (XRT)

XRT have continue to master the operations and performance of the CVT through tuning and customer feedback and based on the results, we are offering that edge in tuning CVT models like what we did to the 5EAT and the 4EAT.

Generally, the following are expected when tuned (The Transmission Computer is not tuned):

  • Quicker shifting
  • Firmer shifting
  • Appropriate gear selection, if possible, for less labouring or load on the engine
Less ping/knocking due to the transmission wanting to be in high gear all the time.
  • Less pedal moving to make the transmission shifting
  • Better fuel mileage
  • Easy over-taking and maneuvering due to quicker acceleration due to the above points.
  • Offers greater shifting and operations. This is the mode many requires if you want to have full control when the transmission shift for hill climbing, racing, over-taking etc.
  • Can offers increase response and less throttle lag. Direct throttle control. Now you maybe able to spin those tires on moving off or get that maximum torque to the ground. Transmission Cooler is recommended if you plan to drive her hard with advance CVT indirect tuning.

Cobb AP Pro Tune & XRT

I have been watching Rallying, Grand Touring, Touring and many other sports where named manufactures (BMW, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, just to name a few) never reprogrammed their ECU’s to run those cars for such Motorsports, even when the power is close to stock and I always ask myself what were the reasons why this was done. As I matured in ecuflashing, Instructing in EMS courses and tuning EMS over the years, I came to understand why this is so, even if such technology was tempting, accessible and cost effective.

The Stock/OEM ECU/ECM:

  1. By design is just enough to support all functions of the stock car
  2. Cannot log at a high rate. This is needed to capture events for remediation
  3. Not powerful enough and high storage areas for Advance Engine Strategies and Operations (Antilag, Fuel, Ignition – all inter-related to multiple level mapping, Complex features and operations). Such enhancements comes in the form of FPGA’s implementations, dedicated CPU Processors per functions and the type of Processors used. For additional reading, please visit the following link –

    2. https://www.design-reuse.com/news/6629/actel-fpgas-development-multiple-race-car-engine-control-units.html
    3. https://www.xilinx.com/video/hardware/what-is-the-difference-between-an-fpga-and-an-asic.html
  4. Do not have enough Inputs/Outputs (I/O’s) for additional functions for a sports car
  5. Ability to program in the field with new strategies for performance operations and access to new features. That is, changing the core functions of the device itself. Kind of like model versions upgrades all happening with just one devices without internal hardware architecture changes.

For a quick read, please review XRT owned link – EMS/Powertrain review thoughts

If all of the above continues to hold true going into the future (and I do not expect it to change due to production cost of vehicles), why then would I want to reflash the Stock/OEM ECU/ECM and as a tuner, not have the best in tuning for a very efficient and responsive engine?!?

That being said, we focus more on EMS tuning for specific operations and functions for an engine needing that edge in performance and development.

The necessary skills, strategies, experience and mental aptitude is so extensive & intensive in this type of tuning and support, that one can achieve the highest goals needed for sports and performance tuning, in relation to the configurations of the car, driver needs and environments.

With such focuses highlighted and discussed above, XRT by its nature and having such backgrounds in these fields (tuning and support), can seriously, precisely and accurately provide reflashing services that is Top Class to none, taking every bit of time to provide the finest tunes in tuning your car, regardless if in Motorsports or every day street driving; especially when it comes to reflashing using Open-Source technology or Cobb Accessport for tuning.

Bringing along those core aptitudes, customers can gain a new experience in tuning support and better operations of their cars. That is, achieving great review in whatever we do when working with the clients. One could accurately say we are customer oriented 🙂

So what do we do?

  1. Provides the greatest level of known support to clients in the tuning industry- https://xtremeracingtuning.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=122&t=670
  2. Does not distinguish the difference between Local & Remote tuning
  3. Seek the best possible reviews as much as possible for the finest work in tuning of client cars – https://xtremeracingtuning.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=48
  4. Provide accurate detailed Diagnostic support throughout the tuning process or XRT Live Group supports
  5. Very log oriented. That is, clients must log for fine tuning; as much as possible. Logging defines the tune!
  6. Custom Tune all cars starting from Base-Line tunes to fine tuning. We do not make OTS (Off The Shelf) tunes the final tune.
  7. Work with the client closely in the optimisation of the tune while fine tuning.
  8. Encourage and insist greater levels of communication between XRT and clients. This provides the best possible experience in tuning and support.

So…. out of what we do, we just do it better by taking our time, which is reflected in our tunes and support that makes us different to other Tuners and tuning support companies. Logging and communication with our customers defines the outcomes.

I was referred to XRT by a fellow member (golferdude1087) for a tune for my 5th gen LGT. I contacted Ed and he responded immediately with answers to my questions, helped me get setup with the necessary software, and sent the initial tune. Out of the box, it was a massive awakening for the car. Its the first time this car put that big of a smile on my face and even impressed my friend that drives a tuned 3 series. After a few days of back and forth with logs and tips, we are now on version 3 and it runs great. It pulls hard and smooth throughout the entire range and still gets decent mileage with “spirited” driving. The logger “dyno” numbers say about 275hp/340tq (wheel) compared to the stock 265hp/258tq (crank), a significant increase even if the software isn’t accurate. His tips on things to look for and areas to improve give me confidence that the tune will be safe too. I would definitely recommend an XRT tune to anyone looking for reliable power.

Subject: Low end torque

Low end torque is much improved, to the point that small maneuvers like passing or cornering can be done without getting into boost. Accelerating from low rpm’s is also better, letting you stay in gear when you’d normally have to downshift.

Subaru Torque Management Patch (XTMP)

Subaru Tuning that affects the Torque Management Operations & Performance of the Engine by Xtreme Racing Tuning (XRT)

XRT continue to MASTER the Operations and Performance of the transmission (5MT, 6MT, 4EAT, 5EAT, CVT) delivery of TORQUE & POWER to the ground in any models utilising the 32bit ECU (Legacy, Impreza WRX & STI, XV, Crosstek, etc). This is seen through tuning, customer feedback and REAL results based and posted all over the internet, including here on XRT.

Addition reviews are here for Auto Transmissions:
Torque Management are already patched in those tuning!

Generally, the following are expected when tuned (The Transmission Computer is not tuned in the Automatic cars):

  • Quicker shifting
  • Firmer shifting
  • Appropriate gear selection for less labouring or load on the engine
  • Less ping/knocking due to the transmission wanting to be in high gear all the time.
  • Less pedal moving to make the transmission shifting
  • Better fuel mileage
  • Easy over-taking and maneuvering due to quicker acceleration due to the above points

Please remember that even Manual Transmission models are affected and are able to accelerate and spin tires easily and freely. Please disable Traction Control.

LuisS review on his XRT Tuned 2011 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5 6MT

XRT Tuned Car

What a great way to start the day!! Now I am officially a part of the XRT Family and wow did I wait too long to make the change. I will do a write to explain in depth but I must say that at stock boost levels (which I was running way higher before) the car is a new machine In Every way!! It feels so great I can’t stop smiling !😬 The car just wants to go! The power is so linear and smooth and are used to have an issue with some choppiness throughout the RPM range which is completely gone now!! Thank you Ed so much for the genius that you put in to every car that you work on the customer support and the knowledge is unsurpassed everyone should be on a tune by Ed I don’t think anyone one who isnt really realizes how much better their car will be because of all the Forst comments from people saying oh when you buy your car/Subaru you need to buy an Cobb, WRONG!!!!It is going to be my goal to change all of that! Have a great day everyone I will update more as soon as I am out of work

Thank you so much Ed!!! You are true genius with tuning!! And also such a great person to work with!! Can’t wait to see what we can do with this car as time goes on!! I have people already calling me for rides so they can see lol.

So I don’t know if everyone knows but I have left Cobb and have moved over to XRT Tuning. It is still the beginning as we are doing a lot of data logs to keep fine tuning and adjusting different parameters of the ecu but I can honestly say that I have never had my car feel this good!! The response of the turbo and the engine used to have quite a delay and would stop making power around 5000rpm. Also I was running 19-20psi. As of right now I am at stock boost levels and I have much better response from the engine and no delay in the drive by wire system and I am also happy to say I am making much more power at way less boost and the car continues to pull and wants to go and keep pulling past redline the power delivery is absolutely incredible and we are nowhere near done tuning it for anyone local who does not believe you are more than welcome to meet up with me and feel it for yourself and see how a really great tune can make a car feel. I am running much safer and not overly rich as the prior pro tune was running. It also got rid of the so called “STi shudder” that people say is common lol. I will continue to update this post along the way so everyone can see what happens and for all the Dyno guys after I am at a point where I want to be I will get a pull done to show the numbers. I highly recommend XRT tuning he is a genius at what he does and ask anyone who has been tuned by Ed and I am sure you will get the same response and his customer support is like none other. I regret not doing this sooner but I Believe everything happens for a reason so the prior moves led me here and I am very fortunate to have someone as knowledgeable and talented tuning my vehicle! Thanks for reading 5th gen fam. If anyone wants to PM me to find out more details feel free.

As posted on the https://www.facebook.com/groups/SubaruTuningInternational/

Well from the research that I did and talking with ALOT of people at all the shows and different forums the tuner that did the pro tune was regarded as One of best tuners around these areas! 😂 He has done a lot of subarus and quite a few 5th gen LGT’s. I am not trying to bash him but after seeing how poorly the car was running and how everything was set I’m positive that everyone should be tuned by you Ed. The way my car has felt from V1 is still better than what he did! Now that we are in a better state knowing how the car is running and the way you have adjusted everything I am driving around with a smile from ear to ear!! I have caught a few people at stop light look at me and probably wonder why a crazy person is behind the wheel but that is because they have never been truly happy behind the wheel of their car , which I can proudly say that I am and I know that things will keep getting better as she learns more. I also want to thank you for the unbelievably great customer service/support that I have gotten and continue to receive. It is so much better than anything I’ve delt with since starting with my car. Thank you very much for being such a great person and a genius at your craft!! I can’t wait to see what’s next!!!!!!!!!

Lol I don’t mind having at least a mini stroke from happiness!! It’s so wild to me that there is still more to come!! It is such a pleasure to work with a tuner as great as you because out here it would be like pulling teeth to make the tuner even give you one revision.

Just a little teaser. Waiting to see the 1/4 mile time. Dbw aggressiveness been crank up a little and so did the boost 4400+. Awaiting logs to see the flow pattern.

Graph shows the TA Protuned Cobbs running more boost vs XRT tuning running a tab low boost in mid range and much lower 4800+. All power is gain by TQ Management, Dual AVCS tuning, reduce fueling and ignition tuning. Again I am waiting on further logs to finalised the tune.

Luis please your last throughts.

This last update again felt amazingDyno

!! The Power delivery is so smooth and so linear it feels as the car just wants to keep going if there wasn’t a redline in place lol. It’s amazing how responsive the car is with the DBW and Turbo response also the way the car sounds is different and more aggressive sounding when getting on it it makes me smile even more LOL To know that there are still things that can be adjusted is wild to me because of how far this has already surpassed any of my expectations and it is light years beyond the tune that I was running prior! Ed you are a true genius and are able to do things with a tune that I have never experienced and I know by all the people you have tuned and how happy everyone is that this is a common occurrence why anyone would not want to go this route is beyond me because from now on I will no longer have any car without being tuned by you! I will update more as time passes thank you again Ed and thank you everyone for following this post stay tuned there is more excitement to follow!

Thank you Ed!!! I was admittedly one of the people’s who get into believing you need a cob if you have a Subaru and did not do enough research beforehand. I am a true believer that the power is in the tuner but it must be an experienced tuner with a great track record like you!! To this day my car has never felt this good and the power be so liniar. I can’t wait to load V8! I will be updating after you and I speak.

P.S. That is another HUGE difference, the customer service and support is dramatically different with you because you care about what the customer is telling you and want the true feedback so that you can see how the car feels to the person. Most tuners just set it how they have been used to setting it on other cars and send it on its way. Thanks again for all your help and being such a great person as well as a truly talented tuner !!! Anyone who wants their car to perform the way it should and better than it ever has needs to be XRT Tuned!!!!!!

EMS/Powertrain review thoughts

For 10yrs I been reviewing the best viable Engine Management Systems (EMS) for customers and their projects.

Customers tend to invest heavily in modifications, spending in excess of $3000USD in mods, while thinking less about EMS’ and their capabilities. Once such reason is due to the complexities of such key devices and how important there are.

Below are my thoughts on EMS determination:

  1. Ability to at an advance level, turn the knobs to effect critical engine operations
  2. Ability to accurately and precisely determine the next engine operation. The need for FPGA’s and possibly RISC processors for that, including precise coding for efficient software processing. The software that drives it all should be optimised for all of the hardware and the hardware optimised to work together efficiently and effectively; in a harmonious way.
    1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field-programmable_gate_array
    2. https://www.design-reuse.com/news/6629/actel-fpgas-development-multiple-race-car-engine-control-units.html
    3. https://www.xilinx.com/video/hardware/what-is-the-difference-between-an-fpga-and-an-asic.html
  3. Strategies and analysis on Engine operations and management
  4. Support into known and hidden features to support the operations and management of engines and Powertrains. That is the ability to get customised firmware of software updates to you in the field. That implies the ability of the manufacture to execute change.
  5. Selective Scoping and high logging rate to capture events and operations

All of the above is achieve when manufactures are part of Engine Development like Life Racing/Syvecs, Motec, Pectel, Bosch and a few other top Powertrain manufactures.
